When hiring a contractor, an often overlooked but critical component of the transaction is whether the company you will be hiring is properly insured. If you hire a company to perform work on your property and that company is not properly insured, you are assuming all of the liability, and you will, without a doubt, be held financially responsible for any injuries or damage that occurs.
Always insist on seeing a current copy of a contractor’s Liability insurance policy ($1 million+) AND Ohio Workers Comp insurance.
The contractor should be able to easily produce these documents for you upon your request.
Do not take a contractor’s verbal assurance that they are insured. If they cannot produce these two documents, both of them, then they are not properly insured and you are at risk for a lawsuit if there is an injury or damage.
